Created by Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh in 1888, Cafe Terrace at Night (also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum) was painted in Arles, France at a local coffee house. Now the cafe in the painting, Cafe Van Gogh, can still be visited today. Carefully recreated to depict the original scene, the combination of warm colors and depth of perspective are definitely unique to Van Gogh's style of painting. The Cafe Terrace at Night painting is the first painting in which Van Gogh started using backgrounds filled with stars in his work. After this creation, Van Gogh went on to use night skies in many of his other famous works including Starry Night Over the Rhone and Starry Night.
Van Gogh began to draw as a child, and he continued making drawings throughout the years leading to his decision to become an artist. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during his last two years. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints. His work included self portraits, landscapes, still life of flowers, portraits and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. His restless spirit and depressive mental state fired his artistic work with great joy and, sadly, equally great despair. This work of art was reproducted as close as to be the same emotions and beauty of the original by Van Gogh. Gracing your home with this reproduced masterpiece, it is sure to bring you many admirers!
